ENHANCING WHEAT PRODUCTIVITY AND COMPETITIVENESS PROGRAM IN IRAN

Brief Summary
With the implementation of its new policies and programmes, Iran seeks to increase the contribution of agriculture to its economic growth in a manner that will increase the production of food to meet energy and nutrition requirements of the people, reducing dependency on imports, moderating rural to urban migration, reducing the social and economic disparities and providing better access to food in urban centers are the main thrusts of the policy.

The objective of the assistance is to assist MAJ and other concerned institutions in strengthening their Wheat Productivity Enhance programme and to improve its competitiveness.

• Analyze constraints of wheat production on sustainable basis in the main production areas of Iran from a farming system perspective, including technology constraints, input and marketing, trade and competitiveness from farmers’ perspective and elaborate possible policy and strategic options to over come these constraints.

• Undertake comprehensive analysis of comparative advantage and competitiveness of wheat and its competing crops and conduct value chain analysis if needed.

• Review the existing Wheat Productivity Enhancement Programme, clarify the sectoral objectives, evaluate current implementation strategies, analyze policy
