Benin, formerly known as Dahomey until 1972, is a small country of 115762 km², located off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and sharing borders with four other IsDB member countries namely Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria and Togo. The country is home to 11.4 million inhabitants of which about 42% live in urban areas. Since 1990, the country has gone through several democratic and peaceful transmissions of power and the organization of legislative and municipal elections.
