Syria joined the IsDB on September 9, 1975. The first IsDB operation in Syria was approved in 1978 and last operation was in December 2013. Syria's capital subscription stands at ID18.5 million (0.04%). It is also a member of all the IsDB Group Entities (ICD, ICIEC, and ITFC). However, due to the deteriorating situation in Syria, the OIC, and therefore, the IsDB Group, suspended the membership of Syria in August 2012.

With a population of around 18 million and an area of 185,181 km2, Syria is located in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the West, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south and Palestine to the southwest.

The violent conflict in Syria continues for the eighth year to take a heavy toll on the life of Syrian people and on the Syrian economy.
