Event Overview

The transition to natural refrigerants and sustainable cooling can accelerate both the global climate and ozone agendas. Our session will address the necessary market and paradigm shift to upscale solutions for sustainable cooling. We will provide an overview of sustainable cooling applications employing natural refrigerants and their role in reducing the overall electricity demand and reducing environmental impacts.

The session will present Egypt as a country example from the Cool Up Programme, to scale up these technologies and implement strategies to realise a catalytic change in their refrigeration and air conditioning sector. We will also address the need to update NDCs with high sector-specific ambition and financing models for transitioning to sustainable cooling technologies. With a focus on technical, regulatory, and financial interventions, country cases will guide the implementation-oriented discussion. Following the session, the participants will understand the challenges and the potential for sustainable cooling. 

Event Outcomes 

The main outcome of the session is to raise awareness of sustainable cooling and its impacts on the rising temperatures in the MENA region due to high cooling demand. This is in addition to higher indirect greenhouse gas emissions from electricity consumption as well as direct emissions from leakages of refrigerants with high global warming potential.
