IDB Extends US$ 124 Million Loan to Bahrain to Reinforce the Electricity Transmission Networks

The Board of Executive Directors of the Islamic Development Bank approved US$ 124 million loan to the Kingdom of Bahrain to finance an Electricity Transmission Development Project. The project is the second phase of a program for reinforcing the 66 KV and the 220 KV electricity transmission networks in Bahrain.

The project aims at meeting the increasing demand for electricity in the Kingdom by reinforcing seventeen 66 KV substations, part of the transmission network within the national grid. The project, expected to be operational in three years, is essential for the power sector in Bahrain to ensure reliable supply of electricity and to meet the growing demand.

It is important to point out that the IDB Board of Executive Directors approved in May 2009 to double the financing of operations over three years (1430-1432 H). The main objective of this scale-up is to help IDB member countries mitigate the effects of the global economic crisis.
