IDB President calls on Tajik President in Dushanbe

Jeddah, 29.03.2012 – President of Tajikistan, HE Emomalii Rahmon received Dr. Ahmad Mohamed Ali, President, IDB Group, in Dushanbe where they discussed ways for promotion of existing cooperation between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Development Bank Group aimed at serving the interests of regional Member Countries.

The meeting further touched upon the role IDB has played in the regional developmental projects particularly in transportation, power generation, establishment of oil and gas transfer lines as well as a number of other projects particularly those which have promoted cooperation between Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

IDB has, to date, provided US$ 240 million for 40 technical assistance and development projects in Tajikistan, mostly in the fields of power generation, education, health, rural development, water and irrigation, agriculture and roads. The “Construction of Murghab – Kulma Road Project” connecting Tajikistan to China in addition to funding several credit lines to local banks to help businesses for the young and middle-income people are on the list of projects financed by the Islamic development
bank in Tajikistan.

President Emomalii Rahmon, further welcomed the holding of the 38th Annual Meeting of IDB Board of Governors to be hosted in Dushanbe in the year 2013.

During his visit to Tajikistan to attend the 5th Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan, Dr. Ali also met with foreign ministers of Tajikistan, Iran and Afghanistan where ways for upgrading regional cooperation amongst IDB Member Countries as well as exchanging Bank’s expertise in preparation and launching of regional projects were discussed.

The Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan is a global gathering which is set to support and promote stability in Afghanistan and help the country build up its own capabilities and fund development projects especially in infrastructure.
