AfDB – IDB Share Experience in Women Empowerment

15.02.2012, Jeddah, KSA – A two-day event held at the IDB Group HQ in association with the African Development Bank (AfDB) discussed their respective organization’s policies and achievements in mainstreaming gender-related issues and further enhancing scope of women empowerment measures.
During the event, Ms. May A. Babikar, and Ms. Elena Carreras, senior gender specialists from the AfDB, spoke about the AfDB’s strategy for integrating and mainstreaming gender in their institution’s operations which was developed in 2001.
AfDB is currently in the process of developing a new strategy for women empowerment as well as institutional capacity building and knowledge generation
Since its inception in 1975, empowerment of women has been an important item on the agenda of the Islamic Development Bank. The empowerment of women is one of the major thrusts in the IDB’s Vision 2020. In 2006, it established the IDB Prize for Women’s Contribution to Development to draw international attention to the vital role women play in developing their communities and the world. The objective of the Prize which has so far been given to 19 individual and organizational winners, is to
recognize, encourage and reward women’s participation in socio-economic development.
