IsDB Group Chairman Visits West Cairo Power Station

February 05 2024, Chairman of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Group, HE Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser, visited the West Cairo Power Station, a testament to the Bank’s long-standing support for Egypt’s energy sector. Funded by the IsDB through two operations in 1989 and 2014 totaling USD 151 million, the project has boosted the country’s electricity generation capacity.

Dr. Al Jasser was welcomed by the Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, HE Dr. Mohamed Shaker El-Markabi, and the Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation, HE Dr. Rania EL Mashat. The IsDB President toured the station’s departments and was thoroughly briefed by the staff on its operations.

During the visit, Dr. Al-Jasser expressed his appreciation to the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, directors of electricity companies, the Director of the West Cairo Generating Station, and the employees for their dedication and notable achievements. He acknowledged the fruitful partnership spanning over three decades between the IsDB and Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and electricity companies, highlighting the Bank’s financing of 19 energy sector projects in Egypt.

Addressing Egypt’s growing demand for clean and reliable energy, the West Cairo Power Station expansion added a cost-effective 650 MW steam plant. This expansion increased capacity and bolstered the national grid, contributing 650 MW and generating 3,153,205 megawatt-hours in 2022.

Wrapping up his visit, Dr. Al Jasser reaffirmed the IsDB’s unwavering partnership with Egypt, especially in the energy sector. He emphasized the Bank’s readiness to provide technical, financial, and advisory support to help Egypt achieve its sustainable development goals by 2030.
