IsDB supports the Implementation of National Education Development Strategy in Tajikistan

Dushanbe, Republic of Tajikistan, 30 January 2024 – The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan have signed financing agreements to fund the Joint IsDB/ISFD-GPE-OFID Project for Support to Implementation of the National Education Development Strategy of the country (phase-II).

The agreements were signed by H.E. Mr. Faiziddin Qahhorzoda, Minister of Finance of the Republic of Tajikistan and Mr. Ibrahim Shoukry, Head of IsDB Group Regional Hub Almaty.

The project aims to improve the learning environment and facilitate system strengthening for sustainable implementation of an inclusive competency-based education system that improves student learning outcomes in Tajikistan.

The key expected results of the project are to provide access to 17,376 students through construction of 53 inclusive schools and their equipment with suitable furniture, digital infrastructure, laboratory equipment and teaching and learning materials; improve the quality of learning opportunities for over 800,000 students through development and printing of CBE textbooks, update the system of teacher preparation and professional development, and strengthen the system of learning assessment to monitor students’ learning outcomes for informed and evidence-based decision-making on education reforms.   

The total cost of the project is US$ 86 million, including IsDB financing of US$ 45 million. The project is co-financed by GPE Grant – US$ 25 million, OPEC Fund for International Development – US$ 8 million and the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan – US$ 8 million.

This major educational project is aligned with country’s National Development Strategy 2030 and will contribute to the implementation of the SDG 4 aiming to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

The Republic of Tajikistan joined the Islamic Development Bank on 27 November 1996.
